I think I speak not too bad... I've been studying english for 5 years at school and then I've been working in an export dept. for 6...
Frankly speaking, it's almost 5 years I don't use english, but I like watching movie to learn more about everyday language.

I usually chat with English speaking people, especially from India or England, often with people from Canada... Try! You'll learn a lot of "slang" or bad words... :D
I listen to my fav band "Queen" I know all lyrics and their meaning...
I don't like film in english, even if I saw the italian version... |

I think my english is not bad but it should be bettary place where i learn english was school ad i am a "Geometra" and there it is studied only for the first two years.
Otherwise i think that i can speak about all in english maybe not using slang or most usefull words but i cna make myself understandable by the others.
I also know that i can speak bettar then i write it! so sorry my mistakes! |

I've never read King's books in english but I've read two times The Pillars of the earth by Ken Follet in english. A real good book.
Mostly i read Tom Clancy in english because the italian translations are horrible (at least.. )

I try to improve my english reading universitary book in english (whan it is possible) or chatting in english (but not often).
I sometimes try to watch and listen the movies in their original language on "tele +" but i can't understand all as i want...
I hope a day to go to USA to learn it...and why not...to work too. |

Sometime I do it, but I think it's much more important to listen becuse understanding is the hardest thing in english. In writing I think it's easier. You have time to think and to understand. When talking you need to catch the meaning immediatly. :) |

I know a basic English, the one you learn at school or by reading and translating your fav songs..
However, few years ago I used to Write some Lyrics in english, there weren't so bad :D
The real problem is not write in english, but speak it! I Went to London on the last Holydays, and although I was able to understand what the people said, the difficult was to speak..they eat a lot of vouels and group some consonants..so I speak and they don't understand..
so..let's have a conversation..this is the problem, I think.

Don't worry for your errors everydone does errors... Take a look at becouse... You've to write because, but that's not an important error... ;)

I've tried to teach to a Guy on london how we say in italian :

I think my English is quite good, but unfortunately I have only a few occasions to speak. Most of the time, in fact, I read English books and websites, watch movies or write messages on forums and letters, but I speak English only when I travel abroad, which usually happens once in a year or so, that it's definitely NOT enough :-D .
It would be very nice and useful to speak English a little more than that, because I've noticed that after a couple of days in a foreign country words start to flow very well and I don't have to think too much before letting them out :) |

Hrm, just a quick note... There are a lot of people that say english people have a clearer and better accent than yankees.
Bullshit, imho. First of all, it all depends on where the brit or the yankee you're talkin to is from, they all have very different accents and slangs....
By the way, quite everyone who knows me (and I'm talkin' about american ones) says my accent is something in between Boston one, Canadian one (Toronto one, in particular), all mixed up with a little texan and southeners' one ;)
That is, almost any damn italian I talk to can't understand almost a single word I say :D:D:D (on the other hand, yankees and canuks tend to understand me quite well ;))
Oh, and, btw, korn's right, brits, and london ones in particular, tend to act like complete morons, just like French people usually do (well, at least the ones living around Paris ;))... |

Hrm, yeah. "btw" is an acronym, just like "imho" (In My Humble Opinion) that's used a lot in irc....
But... "ain't" ("am not") or I'm, or "wanna" ("want to") or the like, are commonly used and accepted. And, should someone really want to learn (and use) english then he/she/it (;)) should at least recognize them... :)

Hmm, as I already said, there really isn't a "yankee accent", mainly because the USA spans about 3000 miles east-west, and 2000 north-south. In fact, it is estimated that there are more than 50 different accents in the States....
That said, what you're probably (or "prolly" ;)) referring to is the commonly heard LA accent, or, a little less frequently heard, NY one, or maybe the texan one... Now, remember that in fact, all these terms mean almost nothing, LA spans about 100 miles north-south, and you can find hispanic, irish, and many more people, each one with his specific accent... The same holds true for NY. Texas is quite a different story, you can, in fact, talk about a texan accent...
Anyway, everyone has his/her opinions, and everyone know what he/she likes/dislikes, so I see no problem at all with your particular preferences. :) |

Frankly speaking, I've been to London, Sydney, NY and LA... In my opinion, the worse accent to understand is the british one. In NY I had some problems as well, but only in the beginning, then it was ok. When I traveled around US I met different accents, but I could understand all of them - maybe I just was lucky to meet people that could talk clearly :D .
I have some relatives in Australia and they all say that my accent is really yankee... To me it's allright, I don't mind. The most important thing is to travel all around and understand and to be understood from everybody! |

I really enjoy reading English books in orginal language... you can find out particulars that the Italian translation could not reproduce (such as word-games).

However, I agree with you, I mean it's very simple and easy to understand! I learnt also German, and I've appreciated a huge difference! There's only one little negative aspect... I think that sometimes English doesn't allow you to express a thing with the "perfect concerning" word... I mean for an Italian guy who knows a wide vocaboulary it's normal to have this feeling... You wanna say something specific, and the right word is missing, or maybe it means several other things!!!... |

Well, if you see it under this point of view, ok I agree... But actually many ENGLISH people (authors, writers, and so on...) say that english vocaboulary is quite restricted compared with Italian or German vocaboulary...
However I don't criticize English...! And then carrying on talking in English with many of my friends (foreigner friends), I practise a more fluent and correct way of speaking...!! |

È uno scherzo, la parola "ghoti" non esiste nemmeno. È solo un esempio fatto dallo scrittore irlandese George Bernard Shaw, per dimostrare l'incoerenza della lingua inglese e della sua pronuncia.
L'inglese non è fonetico, come l'italiano. Non ci sono regole precise per la pronuncia. Non sempre puoi sapere la pronuncia di una parola inglese solo guardandola, e non sempre puoi sapere come si scrive una parola solo sentendola.
In altre parole, si può dire che l'inglese non si legge come si scrive. |

for some reason that I cannot explain, songs written in English have a different flavour.. I could be wrong 'cause I have never wrote anything in Italian, but some of the guys I play with did it in the past, then switched to English.

Italian is more romantic than other languages.... It's ok for love songs, nothing else...
Try to write an heavy metal song in italian, it will be a :sbocco:
When Piero Pelu' was with Litfiba stretched the vocals (proibitooooo is an example) just to reach that "feel" you can have in english but it's really hard to have with italian IMHO....

Idon't really agree about what you said... italian is not only for love songs. I think the most suitable reason for singing in english rather thn italian, and writing songs in english, is that when you sing and write you don't realluy figure what you are saying.. or better you figure the concept, and not the sound it would have in italian.
wirting heavy metal in italian would be pathetic, for an italian. but an enlish who listens to a italian heavy metal song (that, I guess, still does not exist) would think that it is cool as any other haeavy metal song, in my opinion.
if it is not so, how would you explain nek's succes in spain, and pausini's?

L'inglese non è fonetico, come l'italiano. Non ci sono regole precise per la pronuncia. Non sempre puoi sapere la pronuncia di una parola inglese solo guardandola, e non sempre puoi sapere come si scrive una parola solo sentendola.
In altre parole, si può dire che l'inglese non si legge come si scrive.
