“Lingua inglese” a.a. 2003-04: How to Prepare for the Exam
The textbook used in the course, Basic English for Computing, presupposes knowledge of basic grammar structures. For these structures our reference is the grammar summary sections of English File 2, which students can also access online from the publisher’s website: http://www.oup.com/elt/global/produ...hfile_student2/ Remember that the exam includes a pronunciation section. In addition to the transcribed pronunciations in the glossary of Basic English for Computing (pages 120-128), students may wish to listen to the online pronunciations from the English File 2 website to practice the sounds of schwa and other vowels. Students can also hear word stress and pronunciation using the AESL website: http://www.ldc.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/aesl/aesl
This document is designed to give students an idea of how to prepare for the English exam. It provides an example using one unit from the course book. Student should apply this procedure to each unit. The units covered in this course are 1-18.
Study the following outline of Unit 7. Begin with the language work box on page 32, then work from Task 1 on page 30 to task 8 on page 33. Students should also read the tapescripts for each listening exercise. The tapescripts
are in the back of the book. The tapescript for Task 2 is on page 130.
Language work
Giving advice:
Structure: asking a question
Whydon’t you – buy an inkjet printer?
Every time an example of a language structure is used, try to repeat it using it in a totally different context.
Why don’t you
- go to a movie?
- take the test in January?
(I think) you should - buy a laser (printer).
(I think) you should
- go to a movie
- print the pictures
You should see “Gladiator.” It’s an exciting movie.
Advising people not to do something:
Don’t - buy a dot-matrix.
- go to a movie
- wash your computer when it’s on.
We use TOO to make our advice stronger.
You should adjust your monitor. It’s too bright
Having studied the language box go through the unit and the tapescripts in the back of the book and underline every time one of the structures is used.
Task 1
Underline the examples using “should” and the positive and negative imperative:
This should...
Positiveimperative: Keep this level with your eyes.
Try making another example: Study for the test.
Negativeimperative: Don’t have it level with the desk.
Try making another example: Don’t wait until the last minute to study for the test.
Task 2
Reasons for why people should or shouldn’t do something are given in the tapescript p. 130, task 2: Inkjets (they) are the noisiest of the three types. Read the tapescript and fill in the blanks in task 2 on p. 30.
Task 3
Study the question forms. Ask yourself questions and answer them:
What’s the print quality like?
Answer: It’s low.
Answer: It’s high.
Try to make similar questions about something totally different:
What’s your sister like?
Answer: She’s timid. She’s intelligent. etc.
How fast is your car? It’s very fast.
Does it cost a lot to run? Yes, it does. It uses a lot of gas.
etc...
Task 4:
Read this text and study it. Parts of texts in the book could be included in the exam. Remember you are responsible for the vocabulary used in the book!
Task 5
If possible do this exercise with another student. Go to pages 118 and 119, respectively. Ask and answer the questions:
Student A: How big is the screen? Student B: It’s 17 inches
Student B: How much does it cost? Student A: It costs £448.
Task 6
Follow the example given and write other examples.
Task 7
The language structures in the language work boxes can frequently be applied to the sections called “Problem solving”. They are often applied, but not always.
Example: Do you need to print on multi-part forms?
Whydon’t you buy a dot-matrix printer?
(I think) you should buy a dot-matrix printer.
Task 7 “Problem solving” is also a review of how to form a question with a regular verb: Do you need to print on multi-part forms? The same structure is used in the question “Do you speak English?”. Forming questions with regular verbs is reviewed in Unit 5 (Task 4-Task 7). Look at Task 7, #6: “Does she want a career in catering?”. This question is in the third person singular. In the second person singular the question is “Do you want a career in catering?”.
Task 8
This task does not deal directly with the structures in the language box, but it reviews the comparative and superlative presented in Unit 6. Structures are frequently reviewed in this way.
Having studied the material/structures in the unit remember that they are frequently repeated the units which follow. Each time you find material/structures reviewed in another unit, it may/might be a good idea to underline them (“may” and “might” are in the language box in Unit 17, p. 72).
