Esattamente!

Parte 1 --> 5

1)
Use your knowledge of English vocabluary to quickly match the items on the left with the blanks on the right where some words are missing from the definitions by selecting the item and clicking on the appropriate blank:

A "bridge" (risposta corretta) is a hardware and software combination used to connect the same type of networks.
A "router" (risposta sbagliata: la risposta corretta è "gateway") is an interface enabling dissimilar networks to communicate.
A "gateway" (risposta sbagliata: la risposta corretta è "router") is a special computer that directs data traffic when several networks are linked.
A "network" (risposta corretta) is a number of computers and peripherals linked together.
A "LAN" (risposta corretta) is a network that connects computers over a short distance such as within a company.
A "server" (risposta corretta) is a networked computer that stores data to be shared by several clients.
A "hub" (risposta corretta) is a passive electronic device connecting data cabling in a network.
A "backbone" (risposta corretta) is a network transmission path that handles major data traffic.
==================================

2)
Your job is to fix the online glossary below. The database has been corrupted following a partial recovery from backup. The relations between the tables have been lost. The only way to set things right is to select each entry word on the left and click it back into alignment with its own definition. Fortunately, your knowledge of English and your powers of reasoning make this task simple. The disk may fail again at any moment so you must save your work often.
"Deadlock": An object that can be locked by a thread, blocking other threads that attempt to lock it.
"Recursion": When a function or procedure calls itself.
"Peas": A vegetable you might want to be careful about ordering in a Maltese restaurant.
"Murphy's Law": The 1949 observation that any existing alternative way of doing something that results in catastrophe will certainly be applied.
"Schwa": An unstressed and toneless neutral vowel sound.
"Starvation": When a process is perpetually denied necessary resources.
"Ship": An object possibly applied to carrying a goat across a body of water.
"Moore's Law": The 1965 observation that computing power tends to rise exponentially with time.
"Cabbage": A vegetable a computer scientist might be called upon to keep a goat from eating.
"Mutex": When two or more processes are each waiting for the other to release a shared resource.
"Stress": When a group of segments is louder, longer or more resonant that the adjacent ones.
"Metcalfe's Law": The observation that network value is proportionate to the square of the number of nodes.
"Protocol": The observation of formal rules for sending messages.
"Sheep": An animal whose fleece might be used to make a sweater.
"Algorithm": A detailed sequence of actions applied to accomplishing a certain task.
==================================

3)
For each question, skim the passage once and then skim the answers. Rule out an answer you think is absurd. Finally read the passage carefully, read the answers carefully, and choose the most appropriate answer from those remaining.

3.1 JavaScript is a tool, much like a shovel, a screwdriver or a towel. While a towel is handy in every situation, as every Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reader knows, JavaScript has its place and its merits, but also its limitations and places it shouldn’t be applied to. You can use a screwdriver to screw in screws or to clean your ears, however, the latter needs real skill, determination and a lack of fear of injuring yourself. It is much the same with JavaScript, you can use it for great things, but you can also use it to make a product inaccessible, confusing and not usable. Here are some danger signs you encounter in many a bad script example and tutorials written on the spur of the moment rather than following proper research.

The main purpose of this passage is to:

- analyze the development of inaccessible or confusing interfaces.
- explain to students what JavaScript is.
- give the reader a sensitivity to ways of using JavaScript.
- demonstrate the importance of carrying out proper research.
- compare JavaScript to tools we all know about like screwdrivers and shovels.

3.2 Implicitly, one then takes a cordial “Hi” response as an indication that one can proceed and ask for the time of day. A different response to the initial “Hi” (such as “Don’t bother me!” of “I don’t speak English,” or some unprintable reply) might indicate an unwillingness or inability to communicate. In this case, the human protocol would be not to ask for the time of day. Sometimes one gets no response at all to a question, in which case one typically gives up asking that person for the time. Note that in our human protocol, there are specific messages we send, and specific actions we take in response to the received reply messages or other events (such as no reply within some given amount of time). Clearly, transmitted and received messages, and actions taken when these messages are sent or received or other events occur, play a central role in a human protocol. If people run different protocols (for example, if one person has manners and the other does not, or if one understands the concept of time and the other does not) the protocols do not interoperate and no useful work can be accomplished. The same is true in networking—it takes two (or more) communicating entities running the same protocol in order to accomplish a task.

The main purpose of this passage is to:

- compare network protocols to something we all know, use, and understand.
- convince the reader that human protocol is similar to network protocol.
- explain the importance of good manners when greeting someone.
- define protocol for a technical paper so it will apply to many situations.
- analyze why communication sometimes fails if events occur.

3.3 The dining philosophers problem was invented by E. W. Dijkstra. Imagine five philosophers who spend their lives just thinking and eating. In the middle of the dining room is a circular table with five chairs. The table has a big bowl of rice. However, there are only five chopsticks available, as shown in the following figure. Each philosopher thinks. When he gets hungry, he sits down and picks up the two chopsticks closest to him. If a philosopher can pick up both chopsticks, he eats for a while. After a philosopher finishes eating, he puts down the chopsticks and starts to think.

The main purpose of this text is to:

- provide cultural context for the story of the five philosophers.
- explain how philosophers work.
- provide an example of conflict resolution.
- introduce students to the thinking of Prof. Dijkstra.
- describe the problem to students.

==================================

4)

For each question below, selecting one option will result in success but all the other options will generate an error. Please choose the option that will process happily.

1 Adelstein et al. state that: "As we mature, we learn which contextual information is important given a particular situation." In other words, we learn to recognize a characteristic of information that might be best defined as its:
learnability
pertinence
situosity
maturity
impaction
particularity
2 When we say that "protocol" is "an important buzzword in computer networking," this can be taken to mean that:
We should expect to hear the word often in computer contexts.
We should expect the translation of the word to be required for the networking exam.
We should expect the word to be very meaningful.
We should expect the word to be difficult to understand.
We should expect to hear a buzz when the word is misused.
We should expect the word to be used differently from its meaning in diplomacy.
3 You are taking an English test and the question requires you to identify the vowel sound in the final syllable of "proportionate". You define it as:
silent E
schwa
'long' A
'other' A, as in "pasta"
'short' A
none of the other answers
4 Which synonym can best replace "ongoing" in a statement about "indicating the ongoing increase in the value that can be leveraged from technology."
continuing
rapid
predictable
probable
alternating
accelerating
5 In a statement about "indicating the ongoing increase in the value that can be leveraged from technology," we should think of the meaning of "leveraging" as:
mechanizing the value chain.
advancing radio-frequency gain.
gaining mechanical advantage.
mechanizing the value gained.
advancing audio-frequency gain.
gaining financial advantage.
6 You are giving an important talk about an application you have recently developed. The conference is being held in English and it is important for you to pronounce the word "event" acceptably. The important choice is either the first vowel or the stress. You cannot go wrong if you put:
the stress on the second syllable.
the E of "meet" in the first syllable.
the stress on the first syllable.
the E of "meet" in the second syllable.
the E of "met" in the first syllable.
schwa in the second syllable.
7 Dijkstra talked about "The Power of Counting Arguments." Shene wrote that: "The constructor takes two arguments, Number for the number assigned to this philosopher thread, and iter for specifying the number of thinking-eating cycles." A linguist might say that the verb "send" takes three arguments: the sender, the item conveyed, and the recipient. In these sentences, argument does not have its common meaning of "fight" but can instead be best defined as:
A disagreement like that between a wolf and a goat.
A value or reference assigned a role in a function.
The number of members of the set of objects used by a program.
A specified topic related to a process or a command.
An external item formally involved in an action.
The contents of the shepherd's boat, excluding the shepherd herself.
8 During an oral exam you are asked to repeat a quotation in English containing the word "microprocessor." You know that it is important to use the right vowel sound in "micro" and place the stress correctly on "processor." You choose:
the vowel of "skip" and the second-to-last syllable
the vowel of "ski" and the third-to-last syllable
the vowel of "sky" and the second-to-last syllable
the vowel of "sky" and the third-to-last syllable
the vowel of "ski" and the second-to-last syllable
the vowel of "skip" and the third-to-last syllable
