[Video] Quale formato?

Ho un buon numero di piccoli video AVI (realizzati con la fotocamera)... come li archivio? Cioè... i file audio li do in pasto a LAME e me li tengo lì, pronti ad essere ascoltati oppure trasformati in un bel cd senza perdere troppa qualità.
Ma i file video? Pensavo di convertirli in MPEG, ma il formato MPEG-1 sembra diminuirne la qualità e il formato MPEG-2 lo posso leggere solo se ho un software per leggere DVD (software che non voglio avere); d'altra parte lasciarli in AVI sono un po' troppo grossi...
Che faccio?

Lavorando un po' di tempo fa con un regista che voleva mettere su web i suoi filmati avevo usato il formato mov. Mi è sembrato molto flessibile come opzioni di compressione. E i risultati sono stati decisamente validi.

il codec video più avanzato (migliore qualità in rapporto alla compressione) al momento sembra essere l'H.264 prescritto dallo standard MPEG-4.

dai un'okkiata quì:

anche per vedere la lista di alcuni dei software che lo implementano.
