ls, come dice DeepBlue, visualizza l'elenco della cartella, e unito al "> file.txt" scrive l'output su file.txt invece che metterlo a video (era per fartelo postare, perchè non so come si copia dalla shell).

Ma la differenza con CygWin è che quest'ultimo permette di usare le API di linux in Windows?

Per quanto riguarda le socket, il problema non è il compilatore, ma il sistema operativo, ecco forse uno dei motivi per cui si insiste con linux.

Tuttavia, a volte, la Microsoft non fa *tutto di testa sua*

, infatti per usare le socket in Windows (al livello richiesto nel corso di reti), bisogna usare un header differente e chiamare un paio di funzioni in più, se non ricordo male bastano quelle di inizializzazione e chisura della libreria.
